1. Read the Bible β Acts 10
Read about Peter’s vision and his visit to Cornelius, a Roman centurion. Read Acts 10 (NIV). The opening verses are also provided below in the public-domain King James Version.
Acts 10:1β4 (KJV)
1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.
3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.
4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
2. James and Kirk β Interpretation & Discussion
Kirk: Look beyond first impressions. Kirk asked whether we’ve ever changed the way we saw someone. Cornelius was a Roman soldier, but he was also generous and seeking God. Peter’s vision prepared him to welcome people beyond his familiar community.
Kirk: Don’t let fear stop you. We discussed barriers such as race, culture, language, politics, and the feeling that we need to know every answer before speaking about Jesus. Kirk emphasized Peter’s willingness to follow God’s direction and pointed us to Romans 10.
James: Courage, prayer, and living your faith. James encouraged us to trust God working in people’s hearts, pray, and show God’s love through our actions. Sister Carolyn and Sister Karen also spoke about practicing faith when conversations are difficult.

3. Kevin’s Afterthoughts (Personal Reflection)
Read Kevin’s afterthoughts about inviting everyone and praying for Anna
Peter’s vision challenged him to reconsider who could receive God’s message. God was preparing him to visit Cornelius, the Roman centurion. I imagine Peter may have wondered whether entering a Roman soldier’s home was dangerous, but he went and shared the good news anyway. That makes me think about my own hesitation to invite people to Bible Study. Instead of trying to decide who needs it most, I want to invite everyone and leave the outcome to God.
I remember praying beside my mother Anna in the hospital. At first I felt as though my prayers alone had to make the difference. My brother Mike reminded me, βKevin, we’re all praying.β I began asking others in the hospital to pray, too. One man asked my mother’s name and said his prayer group would pray for Anna that evening. I was moved to realize how many people were willing to join in prayer. Since losing Mike this year, that memory means even more to me. It reminds me to reach out, invite others, and remember that I’m not doing this alone.
Personal reflection, edited for readability. Peter’s possible fears are imagined, not stated as fact in Acts 10.
